Youth Leadership Experience
Presented by SONorCal Youth Activation Committee
We are excited to present our second annual Youth Leadership Experience (YLE) on Saturday, June 27, during the 2026 Summer Games! Students in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to attend a leadership summit and gain hands-on volunteer experience and behind-the-scenes insights into how Special Olympics operates. This is a unique opportunity to gain real-world leadership and volunteer experience, learn how Special Olympics operates behind the scenes, and be part of an unforgettable weekend with fellow inclusive youth leaders.

YLE Breakdown
Who? Student facilitators from our Youth Activation Committee (YAC), and 25 high school student participants from throughout our footprint.
What? Students will participate in leadership training, learn more about Special Olympics, and gain hands-on volunteer experience.
When? An orientation breakfast & leadership summit will take place on Saturday, June 27, at 8:00am. Following the leadership summit, students will volunteer at with our athletes from 10:00am – 2:00pm.
Where? The leadership summit and breakfast will take place in Leavey Center, and the Saturday volunteer shift will be at our Olympic Village (students will receive a venue map ahead of time).
Why? The goal of the YLE is to help NorCal students to grow as leaders and volunteers within the Special Olympics movement. Students will network, gain hands on experience, and hopefully sign up to become coaches, volunteers, and future YAC members.
Make friends, get active and be a part of something SPECIAL!
